Week 8 Day 31
“How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?”
Explain your product- The film, My Best Fri(end) follows the story of two 16-year-old girls' names Serena and Grace. They have been best friends since they were 6 years old. They grew up together and did everything with each other. But once they went into high school, they started finding themselves and exploring new things. This led to the girls changing themselves immensely, changing themselves, especially Serena, and this caused a drift between the girls. This is where the film starts, showing the audience a bit of their relationship with each other and their own mothers. The audience can clearly tell that Sloan's character, Grace, is very studious and sweet while my character Serena is edgy and careless. You can see this by the way they dress, for example Grace dresses in bright colors and is stylish while Serena dresses in dark colors and whatever clothes she sees first she puts on. Grace’s hair is neat and clean while Serena’s is messy and all over the place. As you watch the film you can clearly tell that Grace is a sweet young girl dedicated to her studies while Serena only cares about her other friends and having fun with them. She doesn't care about school and is always home late.
Social issue/group and why did you use it? Our social group is teenagers of course. And the issue is friendship and high school. Lots of people go to high school and meet other people that influence them to do certain things that are wrong. For example, you can be peer pressured to do drugs, smoke, or drink alcohol. Once you make that choice you're stuck. What we wanted to show from this film is the life of a 16-year-old high school student in the United States. I am in high school right now, so I see it firsthand everyday which is why I decided to do this idea. It's one I am confident in, and I know lots about. I have friends who do these types of things and we have drifted because you get so wrapped up in trying to be cool to your other friends you lose sight of what's important. You lose meaningful friendship over one bad decision. Coming of age films typically have teenage actors for the roles so our films have teenagers acting on real life issues they see and face every day and will create a connection with the audience.
Explain your research of codes and conventions to highlight the social groups and issues- A lot of coming-of-age films have party scenes in them that show a character throwing the party and being gloried to be this great person that made everyone had a fun time for a couple house. But the things that happen at these parties are the most regretful to teenagers. They do things they are ashamed of like drinking or getting with someone. In our film we don't exactly have a party scene and don't explicitly show Serena being that type, but the audience can infer that from the way she holds herself and treats others. Another convention that the film uses is the way the characters dress and look like. In a lot of coming-of-age films the teenagers wear modern clothing like jeans, hoodies, sweatshirts, and converse. Our film also has the characters wearing the same things to help the audience recognize its genre. By having them dress more at their age it creates an image of the coming of age and how it is usually portrayed. We made sure our actors were also teenagers to make the film as realistic as possible. A25-year-oldd really wouldn't look in place of a coming-of-age film because they aren't teenagers. In coming-of-age films, a lot of scenes are at the character school because that's where kids spend their time most. So, we made are in the product to have scenes that are at their school as well at their homes to make the film connective and realistic. Overall, I feel like my group, and I used prior knowledge and we also watched lots of coming-of-age films to really get the feel of them and to know how to execute it properly.
Overall, what I wanted to show to you from this film is how the life of a teenager is not just school and work. They must take many paths in life where they must make certain decisions that can hurt them or others eventually. I wanted the film to show high school can drift two best friends if they don't make the right decisions and defocus from what's important.
And here is CCR 3 and its word document, I filmed an interview which my sister helped me with! These were all posted on my you tube.
